Cover Girl: Deola Sagoe//TW Magazine July/August 2011

In the past few weeks, the Deola Sagoe brand has slowly but surely crept back to the front and centre of our collective consciousness. 2011 kicked off with an appearance at the BET Honors Awards (Anika Noni Rose chose Deola Sagoe for the event), then came the formal launch of their polo and denim collection and the debut of Ori Oke (from the Japanese shibori and the Yoruba aso-oke) at Arise Africa Fashion Week in Lagos. Deola Sagoe also won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the event.

More recently, Deola Sagoe has been interviewed by Essence magazine and has been mentioned in a Financial Times article centred around luxury. She's also TW Magazine's July/August 2011 cover girl, and an effortlessly beautiful and accomplished one at that. Expect a closer look at her influences and what has kept her ticking non-stop for the last 22 years and counting.

Blogosphere has buzzed non-stop about the rising phenomenon that is Pop'Africana since the beginning of the year -- and rightly so. If you've flipped through the pages of Pop'Africana, seen one of their electric editorials, or even stumbled on their blog, what you'll find in a fresh and refreshing voice unlike any other. Africa isn't one thing, or one place, neither can it truly be summed up in one sentence. cover girl: shingai shoniwa on the cover of New African Woman

we've just caught wind of a magazine called "New African Woman" and those who know it best describe it as "the magazine for the discerning women of substance." issue 4 comes out on Jan 27, 2010 in the UK [due out Feb 1 worldwide] and this edition's cover girl is none other than shingai shoniwa, lead singer of the noisettes. shingai, as some of you may already know, has zimbabwean origins and has cited this as an influence on her style. shingai wears a dress by nigerian designer nkwo onwuka of nkwo designs [seen at Arise Africa Fashion Week last June] and a leather belt by ndamus london. see a full runway photo of the nkwo piece below:

absolutely gorgeous.

spotlight: FAB Magazine

ladies (and gents!), there's a new out-of-africa magazine on its way to the block. debuting in Feb. 2010, FAB (Fabulous, African & Black) Magazine "is a high-end quarterly fashion and lifestyle print magazine with 80% African content." it also "plans to celebrate the fabulous essence of African fashion [and] is intended for the young, aspirational, urban professional men and women and those aspiring to be like them." there's lots more info. in this press release but be sure to stay tuned for updates via FAB Magazine's Facebook Fan Page. we'll be on the lookout for the first issue, dubbed the "music meets fashion" issue, and if the all-star campaign ad above featuring several of nigeria's talented musicians is any indication, we have lots to look forward to.
