Cover Girl: Deola Sagoe//TW Magazine July/August 2011

In the past few weeks, the Deola Sagoe brand has slowly but surely crept back to the front and centre of our collective consciousness. 2011 kicked off with an appearance at the BET Honors Awards (Anika Noni Rose chose Deola Sagoe for the event), then came the formal launch of their polo and denim collection and the debut of Ori Oke (from the Japanese shibori and the Yoruba aso-oke) at Arise Africa Fashion Week in Lagos. Deola Sagoe also won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the event.

More recently, Deola Sagoe has been interviewed by Essence magazine and has been mentioned in a Financial Times article centred around luxury. She's also TW Magazine's July/August 2011 cover girl, and an effortlessly beautiful and accomplished one at that. Expect a closer look at her influences and what has kept her ticking non-stop for the last 22 years and counting.

Who Wore What: Kadaria Ahmed x Ituen Basi

The May issue of TW Magazine features Kadaria Ahmed, Editor of NEXT Newspapers, decked out in a colourful array of distinctly Ituen Basi accessories. Needless to say, very few designers have the balance of traditional and contemporary down pat like Ituen Basi, whose work ranges from elaborate and intricately detailed frocks to multi-purpose bows.

Kadaria Ahmed won many hearts when she moderated Nigeria's NN24 Vice-Presidential and Presidential debates. She wore Ituen Basi both times, so the choices for her TW cover shouldn't be much of a surprise.

Each piece Kadaria wears is available online courtesy of our friends at My Asho, so your  first or next Ituen Basi purchase is just a few clicks away. Happy shopping here.

Cover Girl: Ajak Deng//Pop'Africana, Yr 1, Issue 2

Pop'Africana is truly a priceless experience & we eagerly await the debut of the latest edition [above] featuring Ajak Deng as cover girl/muse. Dare we say -- there isn't quite any publication out there that does it like Pop'Africana and in a world where we readily copy, paste, and poach, Pop'Africana is a distinctly refreshing voice that must be cherished and celebrated.

See past covers here.

Who Wore What: Shingai Shoniwa in Deenola London//Pride Magazine, August 2010

Shingai Shoniwa. So much energy, so much verve, so much spark. LOVE her on the August cover of Pride magazine - there's something very down to earth, no frills attached about her that we greatly admire. She wears a beautiful "wedding jumpsuit" from the style stables of Deenola - a brand well-worth discovering by two ladies, Ola and Deena. Definitely a match made in heaven.

Want a piece of Deenola? Shop an array of fringed jumpsuits, jackets and more, including Shingai's cover look, here.

Cover Girl: Alek Wek//Dutch Glamour [July 2010]

It's no secret that we find Alek Wek endlessly charming so we were only too excited to see her delightful face on the cover of this month's Dutch Glamour. You may recall that she's also on this month's cover of Arise Magazine and blogosphere went a-buzzing over her May 2010 Financial Times spread. We certainly can't get enough. Absolutely LOVE!

Who Wore What: Kelly Rowland in David Tlale//Cosmopolitan SA [July 2010]

We saw this Cosmopolitan South Africa cover a while ago and all three of us guessed Kelly was rocking a custom David Tlale piece adapted from his collection at Audi Joburg Fashion Week earlier this year. The collection featured several rich brown pieces and David Tlale's one of the biggest names in South Africa's fashion industry so it made perfect sense. Well, turns out we were right! Mr. Tlale confirmed via his Facebook Fan Page that Kelly indeed wore one of his pieces! That's a good look, Kelly!

Cover Girl: Alek Wek//Arise [Issue 10]

The latest cover of Arise Magazine (Cover 10) features one of our favorite models EVER, Alek Wek. The world is abuzz with World Cup mania and Arise makes room for the first World Cup hosted on African soil. Wek is sporty chic in a black swimsuit, assortment of neon bangles and watches and her trademark crop. SO fab! The inner pages features other stunning models, including Oluchi Onweagba Orlandi who's super cute in her Nigerian jersey, short shorts and matching green/white/green nail varnish:

Girls will be girls and we love that that shone through even with a typically male-dominated theme. Looking forward to purchasing and reviewing this magazine, especially at its new significantly lower price.

Any other Arise lovers out there?

Cover Girl: Kate Menson//Canoe [10th edition]

The cover of the 10th edition of Canoe Magazine features MNET Face of Africa 2009 winner Kate Techie Menson. It's said to inspired by Andy Warhol's distinct style, but we're a little iffy on the execution. Perhaps we should've gotten a  head shot alone a la Andy Warhol? Whatever it is, something seems amiss so we're on the fence about this one. Perhaps it'll grow on us.

Flip through past editions here and pick up a copy of the magazine at the end of March. More details here, via facebook.

What do you think about this cover?

Cover Girl: Lami Phillips//True Love West Africa [Feb 2010]

[Scanned by ShopLiquorice. Lami wears a to-die-for Marlene Birger dress from Designer's Club and earrings from Mobos boutique. ]

This month's True Love West Africa cover girl is none other than the uber talented songstress, Lami Phillips, whose CD is in very heavy rotation at the SLiq headquarters [*coughs* one day]. Her sound is an eclectic mix of neo-soul with a dash of spoken word and uptempo lyrics that are bound to get you singing along. We dare you not to like her album, Intuition! She's certainly more than a pretty face and sings like she believes and means what she says - but don't take our word for it. Buy her CD and buy this month's True Love to see her FANTASTIC fashion spread and to get some insight into one of our favorite discoveries so far.

What do you think of her cover?
